Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre Colosseum Carlos III is located in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and is one of the oldest preserved covered theatres in Spain. It was built in 1771 by the architect Jaime Marquet, remodeled by Juan de Villanueva (author of the Prado Museum) and declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1995 in the category of Monument. It has a capacity for five hundred spectators distributed between the stalls, two levels of boxes and an amphitheater. In 1918 it became a cinema until it closed in 1967. It was rehabilitated and reopened in 1979. It is one of the most important cultural centres in the Community of Madrid, dependent on the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport. It maintains an annual programme of theatre, music and dance, as well as hosting shows from the different Festivals programmed by the Community of Madrid..
